Happy New Year! 2019 is off to a great start in second grade!
We’ve just begun our new units of study, and the children are working hard and making new discoveries.
Here’s what we’re working on now…
Reading: We have started our Series Book Club Unit. Each child, along with his/her partner, chose a series to begin reading. Not only are the children excited about reading their series books, but they also have the opportunity to engage in rich book-talk around the same characters with their partner. Individually, they are learning about the characters in their series and then discussing what they have found with their club. In this unit, we will be learning about author’s craft and how to verbally share our opinions about a book.
Writing: Our new writing unit is realistic fiction. In the classroom, we are reading realistic fiction texts to use as our mentor texts. The children are creating their own characters and working to make them complex (just like real people). While writing realistic fiction pieces, their focus will be on structure by creating a gripping problem. Our goal is to write many stories and then work to revise them.
Math: We are beginning a new unit that focuses on extending our knowledge of place value to 1,000 and adding and subtracting accurately and efficiently. We will be representing story problems with equations and recording strategies, and recognizing and comparing different strategies for subtraction. Some strategies for addition we will be practicing are: adding a number in parts and creating a related or equivalent problem that’s easier to add. For subtraction, the strategies we will practice are: subtracting in parts, adding up or subtracting back, and creating a related or equivalent problem that’s easier to subtract.
Social Studies: We will be starting our study of the “Age of Exploration”. Our focus will be on Henry Hudson’s life as an explorer and the events of his four voyages.
Other Notes of Importance:
- Birthday Snack – We love celebrations! Keep in mind the celebration should be 10-15 minutes as to not interfere with our academic work. For our birthday celebrations this year, we invite you to join our class and share a special book of your family’s choice. Please note, we will not be celebrating with food. Please give us a week’s notice to plan a celebration, and remember, goodie bags are not permitted during school celebrations.
- Changes to dismissal need to be given in writing. Please send a note either weekly or the morning of a dismissal change.
- PLEASE label your child’s sweaters, jackets, scarves, gloves, hats, and anything else they might take off during the day! There are lots of articles of clothing that come into the room in the morning and they are not claimed (or are lost) by the end of the day. This will make it easier for us to help the children keep track of their things.
- Scholastic Book Orders will be going home. The January flyer is due by January 23rd. If you are interested in ordering, please use your child’s class code to order at Scholastic.com/readingclub (Class 203’s code is J86FM. Class 206’s code is H2LJ7.)
All the best,
Robyn and Mrs. Haimeck
