5th Grade Practice Tasks for Week of 4/1/19 to 4/7/19

Dear 5th Grade Families,

Our concert is about 6 weeks away.  Please take this as an opportunity to really practice from now until the concert.  Here are the practice tasks for this upcoming week.

G Major Scale – Please practice the G Major scale with quarter notes.  Then play the scale as a dotted quarter tied to an eighth note with two quarter notes connected.  I will demonstrate this in class on Tuesday so you see and hear what it is supposed to be.

Caissons Go Rolling Measures 7, 15, 19, 23, 26, 31, 35, 39 and 45 to the end – These measures contain the dotted quarter hooked to an eighth note with two quarter notes.  Please keep in mind different parts have this at different measures.  Not every part will have this rhythm within all the measures I listed.  This rhythm gets passed on to different instruments at different measures.  Each time you have this rhythm you can play out, because that means the other instruments do not have the melody.  With measures 45 to the end the melody gets passed on to each part.  It is important to count that way you come in at the right time.  It also sounds really impressive when each part comes in at the right time.

A Very Short History of Music Measures 52 to the end – Please be mindful when we change from 3/4 to 4/4 and vice versa.  In addition, please take note that I will be changing the tempo a lot within this section, because there are fermatas, ritardandos and accelerandos notated.  The tempo I take in class is the tempo you should be practicing at home.   If you are still struggling with the notes within certain measures it is best to really take a look at those measures and gradually increase the speed.  A metronome can help with this.

You are more than welcome to come in between 8:00 to 8:15 on Monday through Thursday if you have any questions.

All the best,

Ms. Waldman
