First Grade June 2019 Update

Dear First Grade Families,

It is hard to believe that it is June and that the end of the year is upon us!   Our little first graders will soon be moving on and up to the 2nd floor!  Sniffle! But the next few weeks will be action packed in 1-103 & 1-141.

The children are beginning to really build out their structures in architecture.  They have made plans and worked hard to match those plans in the development of their varied structures.   Children have spent a great deal of time learning about the grid system of New York City and the complicated work of planning a city.  They have really taken into consideration the needs and wants of the people in a community.  We are very proud of their progress so far!

Thank you to all the parents that donated books to support our non-fiction reading unit.  The kids have been coming up with so many questions and wonderings about their insects and animals.  Each day, they are excited to research, collect and share out the many bits of information they are learning.  We will be focusing on lifting the level of their conversations with their reading buddies within their research book clubs. Specifically, their ability to organize and share what they are learning in an interesting way both in conversation and in their writing.  We hope they will begin to examine their books, perhaps comparing and contrasting book structures, noticing how the author chooses to share different types of information.

The children have begun transferring all of the important information that they are learning during reading, to writing rich books all about their topics.  It’s amazing to see the ease of their writing as they have become so independent in sharing their ideas!

We are looking forward to seeing everyone on Wednesday, June 19th for our final celebration where we will be unveiling our amazing architecture project.  The children have worked with Alison to carefully design a city that works cohesively!

As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions, comments and/or delights.

All the best,

Sarah & Kristin
