5th Grade Practice Tasks for 10/28/19 to 11/3/19

Dear 5th Grade Families,

Here are the practice tasks for this week.

Essential Elements #64: D Major Scale – Make sure you are fingering the notes correctly.   The only half steps/neighbors we have are C# to D on the A string (G string for bass) and F# to G on the D string (from 4 fingers on the D string on bass to open G string).  It should sound pleasant to the ear.  Make sure you are playing with the right bow hold, holding the instrument correctly, and if you are sitting your feet need to be flat on the floor.  If your standing the highest point of your stand should be at the middle of your nose.  You can use a mirror to help you.

Essential Elements #80 – 82: Please make sure your rhythm is accurate.  Using a metronome would be very beneficial to see if you are playing the rhythm correctly and if your tempo is steady.  I would practice this at quarter note equals 80 to 90 beats per minute (bpm).

Essential Elements #83: We are really starting to learn advanced concepts.  The purpose of 83 is to use your pinky on your left hand to pizzicato open strings.  We sometimes use our left hands to pizzicato to stop a note from ringing too long.  Paganini was one of the first people to perform this technique to wow his audiences.  If you listen to Niccolo Paganini’s 24th caprice you can hear/see left-hand pizzicato.  I have provided a link of Hilary Hahn playing the piece.  She is a phenomenal violinist.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpnIrE7_1YA

All the best,
