Dear 5th Grade Families,
Please ensure your children work on the same tasks as last week. Now that your children have the music to the tunes we are learning for the concert, I thought it was fair to give them more time on last week’s task since they didn’t get the music until the middle of the week. Below, they are listed. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Have a wonderful weekend.
All the best,
First, it is important to warm-up. I would warm-up with how we warm-up in small groups. Essential Elements #130 and 132 will assist you immensely. Number 130 has a C natural which will help you to remember to play C naturals in Gypsy Moon since there are not any C sharps in the piece. I also recommend working on #132 especially the measure we will work on sliding from C natural to B natural with your second finger on the A string (violins, violas, and cellos). For bass, it is the G string.
Once you have warmed-up with these two exercises, it is time to start working on measures 34 to 46 of Gypsy Moon. I would make sure you are playing the correct rhythm by using a metronome and listening to the piece. Remember to start at a tempo you are comfortable playing then gradually increase to the tempo we will play at the performance.
The second task is to practice A Vivaldi’s School Year measures 56 to 67. If you are listening to the pieces while following along with the score on JWPepper, you know I am going to say to make sure you are holding the dotted half note for three beats and don’t just play it as a quarter note. In class, we will work on the two up bows in a row. We call this hooked bowing. I will demonstrate when you have your small group lesson.
One last tip, it is essential to practice smart and not just long. You want to work on sections you are struggling with and not the ones you already can play.
Here are links to the pieces. You definitely should listen to them before you have your small group lesson. You can click on the paper icon under where it says view and you can see, while you are listening to how the parts fit into each other. https://www.jwpepper.com/A-Vivaldi-School-Year/10512550.item#/ (A Vivaldi School Year) and https://www.jwpepper.com/Gypsy-Moon/10312810.item#/submit (Gypsy Moon)
