January Updates

January 6, 2020

Dear Families,

Happy New Year! I am very excited for 2020 and the great work to come for the rest of the year. Here is what is coming up for us in January.

In Reading and Writing, students will be continuing their reading in fiction books and completing their partnerships. Students will continue to read fiction books and write about these in their reader’s notebooks. Please ensure students continue to do this work at home. We will also continue reading nonfiction texts and continue to improve our skills around identifying the main idea and supporting details. Further, we will be beginning a short unit on Poetry for the next few weeks that will involve reading, analyzing and writing poetry based upon an examination of famous poet’s work such as Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost. Students will focus on the literary elements utilized in the work of these poets as they write their own poetry in similar styles. We will also spend some time reading short essays and texts, analyzing these, and writing to respond to these essays as well.

In Math, currently, we are focusing on data. Students are learning to collect and organize data, specifically on line plots. Students are learning to read line plots and analyze the data in order to draw conclusions. Shortly we will transition back to multiplication and division and be focusing on bolstering these skills in larger numbers. Students will further develop their ability to use the algorithm and the relationships between multiplication and division.

In Social Studies, students will be learning about some of the early explorers and we will soon be learning about colonization. We will learn about the development of the 13 colonies and students will have an opportunity to learn deeply about one of the 13 colonies. As a class, we will also study closely the colonization of the New York colonly. In Wingspan, we are beginning to prepare heavily for our May show. The students will be writing a lot about their social studies knowledge in order to develop the play with Ms. Sarah and will begin acting more in the auditorium in preparation for this show.

As always, if you should have any questions please feel free to reach out!

Best,

Zoe
