Science Update October

Dear K-4 families of Lower Lab,

It was a great first two weeks of Science class! I will be sharing some current updates on what students are learning in Science, and some exciting things to look forward to.

Kindergarten: Kindergartners are currently working through the Needs of Plants and Animals, where they are currently scientists exploring a fictional community called Mariposa Groove, investigating monarch caterpillars in the Garden. In this unit we will be taking a close look at animals and plants, which includes planting and observing plants under different conditions. I have emailed a list of suggested materials to support our hands on activities. We began our unit by talking about our senses and things we observe on a science(nature) walk, and will soon begin planting:

1st Graders: 1st graders are currently working through Animal and Plant Defenses, where they are currently marine scientists that are learning about Spruce the Sea Turtle. In this unit we will be observing plant and animal structures, and how animals and plants survive. We are currently building models of a plant:

2nd Graders: 2nd graders are currently working through Animal and Plant Relationships, where they are currently plant scientists observing different Habitats, and investigating the chalta trees in the Bengal Tiger Reserve. In this unit we will be observing the relationships between plants and animals. I have emailed a list of suggested materials to support our hands on activities. We are currently designing Habitat dioramas:

3rd Graders: 3rd graders are currently working through Inheritance and Traits, where they are wildlife biologists studying traits, and are currently learning about variation of species of wolves in a fictional national park. In this unit we will be observing the variation of traits between organisms, patterns in traits, and that some traits are from inheritance and some are from its environment. We are currently working on modeling animal life cycles and examining variation in traits:

Coming Soon: Once we are deeper into our Science curriculum, I want to integrate Computer Science lessons using coding with code.org. I will share more information on this in the future.
